Flee Youthful Lusts
First in a series of studies of 2 Timothy 2:22
“Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” - 2 Timothy 2:22
Paul’s exhortation here to the young preacher Timothy is no different from his teaching to the Christians in Corinth (1 Corinthians 6:18): Paul says not only to abstain from, but actually to “flee,” situations that might cause us to be tempted to compromise our purity.
The original word means to “keep fleeing continuously,” indicating it is not just a one-time act for the young. Thus, the command automatically includes people of all ages, not just the young, although their temptations may be more intense.
To make it to heaven, we must maintain a standard of morality that coincides with instructions God gives in His word about how we are to live our lives in this regard. Focusing on eternal life in heaven will strengthen our faith and our ability to overcome Satan’s temptations.
